John Maher Scholar Athlete Award winners honored at banquet

High school athletes from across Williamson County were honored for their achievements in sports and in the classroom June 7 at the John Maher Scholar Athlete Award Banquet.

The banquet, which was sponsored by John Maher Builders and the Williamson Herald, invited recipients of a John Maher Scholar Athlete Award to dinner with parents, friends and coaches.

Yet, the real treat for many in attendance was hearing the guest speaker Mike Keith, the “Voice of the Tennessee Titans.”

Keith told the crowd about his favorite Titans moments, next year’s roster, and offered insight to those advancing to college.

“This is going to be a big milestone in your lives,” Keith said.

He also answered questions from the crowd, which mostly dealt with which Titans to watch in the 2007-08 season. But, he also gave one crucial piece of advice to students who wish to continue their sports careers: “I’d say go for it.”

“I think that’s a big thing. Whatever you want to do, just do it,” Keith said. “You have to be willing to take the challenge.”

The night concluded with each athlete being awarded a plaque, which they held while posing for a picture with Keith and John Maher, president of John Maher Builders and a recognized supporter of education as a former teacher himself.

Scholar Athlete Awards were chosen each month of the 2006-07 season.  One male and one female athlete were chosen from a group of essays submitted by coaches and family about their outstanding performance both on and off the field.

“I was honored that they thought of our company,” Maher said about the Herald’s scholar athlete program. “I’ve had the pleasure of watching many of you compete. I know the veracity involved while going to school is difficult.”

Maher, who is a former educator and large contributor to public schools, was also recognized with an award at the banquet.

“John has stepped up in many ways,” said Darren Henrie as he presented Maher with a Shining Apple Award on behalf of Independence High School.
