Carlisle White of Battle Ground Academy and Matthew Gabriel
of Independence High School are the April winners of the John
Maher Builders Scholar Athlete Award, presented by the
Williamson Herald.
White, a junior, is the daughter of
Cammy & Brad White and was nominated by Mark Rogers,
Battle Ground Academy athletic director.
“Carlisle is a
three sport varsity athlete at BGA and is a star on the
volleyball team that went to state,” Rogers said. “She is the
starting point guard and captain for the varsity basketball
team and is a vital cog on the BGA varsity track team where
she is a sprinter. Carlisle holds two school track records and
competes in four events at track meets.”
While
competing around the year in athletics, White has maintained a
4.1 grade point average, Rogers said.
“Carlisle was
just selected by her faculty and peers to be on BGA’s Honor
Council for her senior year. Of all of BGA’s fine
student-athletes, Carlisle White stands out as one of the most
exemplary and most gifted,” Rogers said. “She is a natural
leader who is humble and finds being a giver in a world of
many takers the right thing to do. Carlisle is admired by her
fellow students and her faculty as a true example of what
being a successful student athlete is all about: the perfect
balance of academics and sports.”
White has more than
100 hours of community service with organizations that support
disabled children and also Habitat for Humanity,” Rogers said.
“She is a leader in her junior class for BGA community service
projects and belongs to SAP which is a community service
organization.
White is a member of her church’s choir
and sings every Sunday, Rogers said. She also volunteers at
New Hope Academy on Saturdays. She was BGA’s representative to
Girl’s State and was a member of Youth Leadership Franklin.
Gabriel, also a junior, is the son of Trudy & Jim
Gabriel of Spring Hill.
According to Coach John Berry,
Gabriel provides leadership on the team, serving as a captain
for two years and qualifying for the state tournament this
past season.
“Matthew is a leader. In everything he
does he leads other students and teammates,” Berry said.
“Matthew is comfortable enough to lead vocally and by
example. He is a kid that I never worry about. I
know he is capable of handling any situation that comes his
way.”
Berry counts heavily on Gabriel and his
skills.
“He serves as an assistant coach to me, He is a
bridge between me and the other wrestlers,” Berry said of
Gabriel, who has a 4.2 GPA.
“His G.P.A really speaks
for itself. What is amazing he has accomplished this while
taking Honors and Advancement Placement classes,” Berry said.
“This award is given to a scholar athlete and Matthew is the
best example of a scholar athlete we have at
Independence.”
An active member of the National Honor
Society, Gabriel has also worked on several city council and
mayoral campaigns, Berry said. He has volunteered his time
coaching middle school wrestlers.
He is
considering Vanderbilt and Cornell universities for his
collegiate career.
