Balance important for Maher award winners

David Carter credits Ron Crawford and the rest of the
Brentwood High football coaching staff for his ability to find
a happy medium between school and football.
“They help
get us into a routine that helps us with school and practice
together,” said Carter, a senior offensive tackle for the
Bruins.
He, along with Ravenwood girls’ basketball
standout Kara Cook, have been selected as the recipients of
the Williamson Herald/John Maher Builders Scholar Athlete of
the Month award for August.
Carter said the secret is
to keep everything enjoyable, because if you struggle in one
area, the other can also suffer. “You have to have a
balance of both to do well,” he said. “When football comes
along or in school, I just try to have fun doing it. If you’re
struggling in school, you will struggle on the field, and if
you struggle on the field sometimes that carries over to the
classroom.”
Being overwhelmed with things to do is
nothing new for student-athletes these days, Cook said, but
one of her secrets is to take a break every now and then to
help recharge.
“It’s hard to study and be thinking
about going to practice,” she said. “Sometimes it gets all
jumbled up, and I get tired and stressed out. If I’m tired
from basketball, sometimes I’ll go study.
“They
definitely balance each other out.”
Both keep active
outside of school as well, with Carter being involved with the
Boy Scouts and his local church in addition to running his own
yard service business.
Carter and the Bruins will begin
their football season Friday with against Coffee County, a
team Brentwood beat 41-7 last year. Brentwood will be trying
to make the playoffs for the 10th straight year.
