Soccer standouts receive scholar-athlete honors
By DOUG DYER, Sports Editor ddyer@williamsonherald.com
One of the good things about being a student-athlete is
there really is very little time to goof around. When you’re
not practicing or playing your sport, you have to focus on
schoolwork and vice versa.
Such is the realization
Moises Sixtos has come to over the last several years. And it
is because he has very little free time during his soccer
season that he has been able to excel in the classroom and be
an important cog for the Independence High boys’ soccer
team.
“When soccer’s going on, there’s really no time
to do anything else besides soccer,” the rising senior at
Independence said. Sixtos, along with Brentwood High girls’
soccer player Alison Sielbeck, have been named as the
Williamson Herald/John Maher Scholar Athletes of the Month.
Both are rising seniors at their respective schools, and both
stay active on and off the field.
“Moises is an
incredible student-athlete,” Independence boys’ and girls’
soccer Coach Josh Phillips said. “He’s definitely a guy that I
would be proud to have freshmen emulate when they come in
here.
“What we’ve built here with the Independence
soccer program, we’ve really built around
Moises.”
Sielbeck has had a similar impact on her
Brentwood High team, helping the Lady Bruins reach the state
tournament the last two seasons and still having time to stay
active with her church and extracurricular activities. She was
unavailable for comment this week, because she is currently on
a mission trip to Belize.
“(Alison) has started since
her freshman year,” Lady Bruins’ Coach Mike Purcell said. “She
was our second-leading scorer that year but has been the rock
on our defense the last two years. She’s also a great student
and really involved outside of school with her
church.
“She’s a great young lady.”
