Graham, King earn scholar-athlete honors

Caitlin Graham remembers a time when she had to take to the road to finish a school project … literally.

“I had to do a project in a hotel room in Indianapolis,” the Battle Ground Academy senior volleyball player said, talking about a trip with her club volleyball team. “As we were leaving, we forgot and left the posterboard on top of the car.”

As the car pulled out and headed toward the highway, the valuable research project took flight and fell onto the pavement. Fortunately a friendly car passing the Grahams flagged them down and let them know the posterboard was gone from the top of the car.

“There were two sheets, one was blank and one had the project on it,” Graham said. “The one that was blank we lost, but the one with the project we found.”

Such is the life of a busy student-athlete, finding any time possible to get schoolwork done while still being able to participate in extracurricular activities. Those who excel, like Graham, deserve the success they work so hard for.

It is for that reason Graham, along with Christ Presbyterian Academy cross country runner Matt King, have been selected as the Williamson Herald/John Maher Builders Scholar Athletes of the Month for October.

Both excel in their respective sports, with Graham in the middle of her fourth year as a starter for the BGA volleyball team, while King continues to be a solid contributor for the CPA cross country team under coach Bill Delvaux.

“(Being a student-athlete) takes a lot of sacrifice,” King said. “You have to think about your priorities and keep the big picture in mind. It takes dedication to go on those 12-mile runs on a Saturday, because that’s the last thing you want to do.”

“This senior year has been hard academically,” Graham said. “There are times when you come home after games and you’re exhausted from school and from playing. The last thing you want to do is work.

“But it helps getting into a system after eight years. It’s taught me to manage my time well. You learn how to do your work in the car or read in between games.”

To nominate a student (male or female) for the monthly Scholar Athlete of the Month, log onto williamsonherald.com and click on the John Maher Builders logo for the submission form. Information on the form includes the student’s school, year in school, grade point average (if known), along with a maximum 200-word essay by the nominating party on why that particular student deserves the honor. Be sure to include pertinent information such as extracurricular activities away from school.

One male and one female will be selected from the nominees, and the winners announced on the Sunday following the 15th of each month.
