Jennica McGuire wouldn’t change her active
schedule for anything. A full school day, followed
by volleyball practice and studying is just fine
by her.
“I get up at 6 a.m., and I’m
usually in bed by 11 or 12 that night,” the Page
High senior said. “I wouldn’t change it for the
world. Volleyball is something I love to do; it’s
my outlet.”
Her passion for succeeding in
all she does is just one of the reasons she, along
with Ravenwood senior Kevin Coll, were selected as
the Williamson Herald/John Maher Builders Scholar
Athletes of the Month for September.
“When
I have a bad day at school, I always have
volleyball after that,” McGuire said. “If I have a
bad day at volleyball, I still have school and my
friends. I just try to have a good balance of the
two.”
She is a three-year starter for the
Page volleyball team as the setter, helping the
Lady Patriots reach the Class A/AA sectional round
the last two years. Her hopes are to take that one
step farther this fall.
“We have a young
team, but we have a lot of talent and potential,”
she said. “We’re hoping to make it to state this
year.”
Coll, a rising senior on the Ravenwood
lacrosse team, cites some of the same hurdles to
clear to find his balance of schoolwork and
success on the lacrosse field.
“It’s a lot
of hard work,” he said. “I’ve had to learn a lot
of time management over the last couple
years.”
As if lacrosse isn’t enough Coll
also competes on the cross country and swim teams
for the Raptors, but he said doing those other
sports help him in the long run.
“Those
sports are fun to do, and it gets me in shape for
lacrosse,” he said. “That’s my passion.”
In
addition to their athletic pursuits, both also are
active in the community. McGuire serves as a
volunteer at Williamson Medical Center and with
the Special Olympics, while Coll is active in his
church.
